The Beginning of the Adventure On this trip, we were also joined for a few days by my girlfriend Sofia, who came straight from Florianópolis to enjoy this journey with us. We started our first day with a hearty breakfast at Pousada Girassol. Our morning would be full of activities, starting with Parque das Cachoeiras, which is very close to downtown Bonito. We’re going to hike about 1,700 meters, stopping at five attractions, including waterfalls and springs. Before we begin, we need to explain three crucial things about tours in Bonito and the surrounding region. Important Information About the Tours The first thing to know is that tour prices vary between low and high season. At Parque das Cachoeiras, for example, the price with lunch included is BRL 340 in low season and BRL 392 in high season. It’s worth noting that residents and people born in Mato Grosso do Sul are entitled to discounts on several tours. The second thing you need to know is that it’s mandatory to book visit days and times through an agency. Attractions have a daily visitor limit, so it’s recommended to book in advance. In low season, the ideal is at least one month ahead. In high season, at least three months in advance. High season includes December, January, July, and holidays. There is also the so-called peak season, which includes dates like New Year’s Eve and Carnival, when booking up to six months in advance is recommended. In Bonito, booking tours through agencies is mandatory, and prices are standardized. That means what really differentiates agencies is their service and the conveniences they offer. Exploring Parque das Cachoeiras With that explained, let’s get back to Parque das Cachoeiras. After a short van ride, we arrive at the start of the trail. We begin the hike, and an important detail I hadn’t mentioned earlier is that this tour is considered easy. Almost the entire route is on wooden walkways, with some dirt sections, but everything is very manageable. It’s an accessible place, ideal for those who have difficulty with long hikes. The first stop is Cachoeira da Gruta, a contemplation spot. The second is Lagoa da Nascente, or Lagoa da Ressurgência, with crystal-clear waters. The first swimming spot is Cachoeira do Mulungu. The next stop is Cachoeira do Sol, one of the park’s main highlights. We leave Cachoeira do Sol and—seriously—what a beautiful place! It has a very deep pool, about 5 to 7 meters. So you either need to know how to swim, use a rope on the side, or grab a life vest, which is free here. Behind the waterfall, there’s a small cave where, when the sun hits, the water turns greenish. It’s truly an incredible sight! Another interesting detail is that the waterfall formations here are different from those in other parts of Brazil, as they are formed by calcareous tufa. Cachoeira do Salto and Cachoeira do Sinhozinho We now arrive at Cachoeira do Salto, named because it has a deck where you can jump. The height is 5 meters, and of course, we’re going for it! Next is Cachoeira do Sinhozinho, which has a legend behind it—but we’ll leave that story for the guide to tell when you visit. The last stop on the trail is Cachoeira do Amor, considered the main attraction of Parque das Cachoeiras. This place is wonderful, with multiple waterfalls and lush vegetation around. The water, although not as crystal-clear today, has a beautiful green tone. To end this trail on a high note, let’s take one more swim! After the hike, the riverside area is open for those who want to relax by the Mimoso River. There are chairs, umbrellas, and spots to enter the water. Lunch at Parque das Cachoeiras, already included, is very complete, with options for all tastes. Visiting Aquário Natural After lunch, we drive about 40 minutes to reach the second attraction of the day: Aquário Natural. Here, we’ll do a snorkeling tour. The name already says a lot about what to expect: plenty of underwater fauna and flora. Life vests, wetsuits, and masks are included in the price, which is BRL 320 in low season and BRL 396 in high season. You only pay extra if you want a full-face mask. All snorkeling tours in Bonito include training beforehand. What sets Aquário Natural apart is that the adaptation phase happens in a pool, which is excellent for first-timers. We follow a 500-meter trail, passing some springs, until reaching the adaptation point in the river. Once in the water, it’s clear the name wasn’t chosen by chance—it’s a true natural aquarium. We spend 15 to 20 minutes there before starting the float. The descent along the Bahia Bonita River is about 800 meters, and surrounded by many fish, we enjoy every minute. Even in winter, the water temperature stays between 21 and 24°C. The Trail and the Snorkeling After leaving the water, we start a 1,200-meter trail back to the reception area. This walk is very interesting, as we pass by a wildlife rehabilitation center for animals that suffered trauma. The snorkeling was incredible! Entering this underwater world that we don’t usually see is very special. The water’s color changes depending on sunlight and the shadows of trees—it’s almost therapeutic. Now let’s talk about RARAS, the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. Here, animals are rescued, treated by veterinarians, and prepared to return to nature. We saw a baby tapir and a recently rescued anteater. With the visit to RARAS, our first day ended successfully. And this is just the beginning of a week full of incredible attractions! What to Expect in the Next Days Good morning, everyone! Starting another day of the itinerary. Today will be intense. We’re visiting Gruta do Mimoso, a flooded cave where we can snorkel. We’re waiting for our group to be called. We gear up and head out on a short 300-meter walk. Along the way, the guide shares some curiosities about the cave. As soon as we see the pool, we’re amazed by the color of the water—an intense blue that contrasts beautifully with the limestone walls. The snorkeling lasts 30 to 40 minutes. We take advantage of the incredible visibility to admire the rock formations and small fish. The price is BRL 291 in low season and BRL 346 in high season. Cachoeiras do Rio do Peixe In the afternoon, we visit Cachoeiras do Rio do Peixe. The first thing we do is have lunch, which is included. While waiting, we spot three species of macaws: red, blue, and blue-and-yellow. After lunch, we begin a 3 km trail, easy level, with several swimming stops. The first stop is Poço do Arco-Íris. Even without sunlight, the water color is beautiful and crystal clear. Next is the Fish Pool, where the name makes perfect sense. While enjoying the fish, let’s talk prices: the Rio do Peixe trail with lunch included costs BRL 305 in low season and BRL 360 in high season. Cachoeira do Elefante and the Zip Line We arrive at Cachoeira do Elefante, which used to resemble an elephant. Erosion changed its shape, but the name remained. Now we’re at the water zip line—another adventure in Bonito! The last stop is Poço do Trampolim, with an excellent depth for diving. Today, we saw a flooded cave, several pools and waterfalls, and even witnessed an otter hunting—a magical moment. In Bonito, you experience so many different things and make the most of each day. Nascente Azul: A Paradise Good morning! Today we’re snorkeling at Nascente Azul, one of Bonito’s most incredible spots. After our group is called, we receive a brief explanation. We follow a 300-meter trail past beautiful calcareous tufa formations. At the support area, we store our belongings in lockers and gear up. Here, you can choose to wear a wetsuit or not. With the wetsuit, you stay warmer and float better. Already equipped, we ride a small vehicle close to the river and reach the adaptation deck. The snorkeling route is about 350 meters, divided into two parts: the spring area, where you can free dive, and the second stretch, lasting 20 to 25 minutes. Prices are BRL 340 in low season and BRL 420 in high season. Nascente Azul Beach Club Snorkeling finished! This is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited. Before lunch, we enjoy the Nascente Azul beach club, which is very complete, with a small beach, snack bar, and various activities. For those who only want the beach club, prices are BRL 114 in low season and BRL 126 in high season. The lunch buffet costs BRL 85 per person, featuring regional Pantanal cuisine. Transportation and Arrival in Bonito After lunch, we head to the next attraction. There are some direct flights to Bonito, but the most traditional and usually cheaper option is flying into Campo Grande, about a 3-hour drive away. From Campo Grande to Bonito, you can go by bus or shared transfer (BRL 100 to BRL 160 per person), private transfer (BRL 800 to BRL 1,000 per trip), or rental car, with daily rates from BRL 89 to BRL 647, depending on the category. Visiting Buraco das Araras After about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the road, we arrive in Jardim to visit Buraco das Araras. It’s the largest doline in South America, about 100 meters deep and 500 meters in circumference. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 10 minutes, with a short 970-meter trail and two viewpoints. The price is BRL 160, regardless of season. We saw macaws up close—an iconic symbol of Brazilian wildlife. Accommodation Tips Now it’s time for accommodation tips. Today is the day for Cânions do Salobra, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. We’re doing Aquatracking, a 6 km hike of moderate to difficult level. After breakfast, we head out by off-road vehicle to the trailhead. It starts raining, but the Salobra River’s color is stunning. The first swim stop is Poção do Urubu Rei, with rock walls up to 70 meters high. Aquatracking costs BRL 340 in low season and BRL 450 in high season. The second stop is Cachoeira da Gruta—rain or not, it’s breathtaking. Fazenda Ceita Corê Starting another day, today we’re visiting Fazenda Ceita Corê, one of the region’s most famous spots. The tour with lunch and beach area included costs BRL 404 in low season and BRL 542 in high season. The first stop is the spring of the Chapena River—far more beautiful than I expected. After swimming, we do a 200-meter float. The trail to the waterfalls is about 4 km, easy to moderate. We reach Ceita Corê’s postcard spot, Cachoeira Charmosa. Food Tips Back at Pousada Girassol early, we show the room—spacious and comfortable. The inn offers snacks until 8 pm. Now, food tips: Casa do João, with traditional Pantanal cuisine, rated 4.7; and Bacuri, rated 4.9. Snorkeling in Rio Azul Today we head to neighboring Bodoquena to snorkel in Rio Azul.
